Not a good day...here is what happened:
As most of you know, we moved from Cali to New York...when we bought the house we had to buy a new electrical dryer. So we went to the only appliance place in the area, Sears. We bought a Frigidaire because we have their stove, washer and refrigerator...we are loyal to brands that we like.
My Frigidaire Affinity dryer that we just bought 1 year ago was making a popping sound and smelled like something was burning when we first bought it and the Sears repair guy came out to "fix it" he said the heater coal was bad--so it was replaced-- a few days later it was STILL making the same noise and smell...they came out and said it was "normal" :/
so today I was doing laundry and smelled FIRE--I took the blankets out of the dryer and saw flames coming from the lint screen area--took the lint screen out and yup--FIRE!!
I called my hubby to come to the laundry room as I called 911--they got here in like 5 minutes but, the whole house was full of smoke--mind you, I am 3 months pregnant and smoke inhalation is probably not good...this is my FIRST HOUSE and I was nearly passing out at the fact that it could go up in flames...
I got the kids out--grabbed my cell phone and headed next door to a neighbor's house as my poor kids are crying their eyes out that their house is smoking...all the neighbor's are out and I am SHAKING...
the laundry room is TOAST, dryer is TOAST, the floor in the laundry room is toast as is the ceiling in that room along with the towels, paper towels...oh my gosh-- we store TONS of stuff in that room and it is ruined! The flooring in the entire house, the entire house is full of ashes and again, where are we sleeping tonight considering we have NO family here?
Needless to say I will be taking care of this mess for a few days...don't expect to see me around for a while as this mess gets taken care of.
Sears said we are out of warranty--and I said that the warranty is NOT the concern-the fact that they SAID THIS WAS NORMAL and now I have fire and smoke damage is the problem...and I have no dryer...and I have lots of laundry to do...and my house is full of ashes while I have a baby in my belly and 2 small children...this is not MY problem--this was the result of someone not doing their job from the jump and someone is going to have to do something to help us now. Oh, now my husband has to also miss a few days of work to stay here with me to get all this handled...this is beyond an inconvenience at this point.
***************************UPDATE #1********************************
First, to all the jerks who felt it was necessary to "Anonymous" comment on how I shouldn't be blogging this and I should call my insurance company--thanks! I am not an idiot--I DID call them but, thanks again for being so supportive :/
I am not someone who overreacts...of course we called our home owners insurance company! It was Sunday--they will be here in Tuesday afternoon to asses the damages. Meanwhile, my husband and I vacuumed [thank GOD for my Dyson which did an amazing job} and we mopped as best as we could. The walls are black--it's not gonna just be a wipe clean deal with that. Some of our clothes smell like fire, especially downstairs. After we thought we had cleaned enough for the night, I was hungry...my husband opened the cabinets to find MORE ASH all over the dishes and food in the cabinets! :( Not a good night...
Tonight we may stay at a hotel...I can't stomach the smell of the smoke as faint as it may be to others, my pregger senses are strong and I can smell everything!
I like to have all my ducks in a row so, today we will be talking to the Johnstown Fire Department to get a report of the fire. I already talked to Sears {$100 discount IF we buy another Sears appliance} and that isn't going to cut it. I have not spoken to Frigidaire but, after looking up via Google some other customers of the Affinity Electric Dryer have had issues with it shorting and even one other customer had a fire!
********************UPDATE #2*******************************************
Talked to Frigidaire and WOW! The guy who I spoke with says right off the bat "ma'am, since you purchased this dryer in March 2008 there is no warranty" this was BEFORE HE EVEN KNEW WHAT HAPPENED!
I then tell him the history of this appliance...he then says "do you have the model number or the serial number?" Umm, NO they BURNT OFF! It was like he didn't even hear a word I said...I fully explained to him that the dryer is melted--toasted--done!
He then tells me that he honestly can't "process a claim" without this information. That is when I went a little bit batty...I have worked in customer relations for almost 15 years...that is NOT what you say to someone who just had a FIRE! and he said "honestly"?? I told him "honestly, that is BULL SHIT"
This is more than I care to deal with at this point...and I am hoping that our insurance can get this taken care of. I was just hoping that I could at least get a genuine "I'm sorry" from Sears or Frigidaire...and wanted to have this documented. I mean, thank GOD we were home and not running errands while the dryer was running...like many people do. Thank GOD I smelled it on time and was able to get the kids out of the house and the dog.
I just think that this story is a total BUYER BEWARE when dealing with Sears and Frigidaire...because so far it seems like customer service is dead.
I am thankful that my family is safe but disappointed that even in a recession companies are not wise enough to save their reputations when it comes to something like a family who could have lost their 1st home to a fire.
******UPDATE**********
The power of positive thinking and remaining pretty calm has worked out. I was contacted by a very professional representative of Sears and we are currently working on something. For insurance purposes I have to look into what is being offered but I can say that it is a very thoughtful gesture being made.
I have to commend Sears for responding to me. I still have not heard one word from Frigidaire which is beyong shocking considering the large campaign they are doing with bloggers right now where they are giving out large appliances to them for review.
I will be sure to keep you all updated once things are finalized but, I will tell you this...even if I can not accept the offer from Sears, they should be recognized for their professionalism and courtesy. The representative who contacted me was extremely sincere in his apology for what happened and I did not at all feel that it was a fake apology.
I look forward to getting past this mess soon. The insurance sent the adjuster out and it looks likes the damages are at about $8-10K. The house is going to get all cleaned up tomorrow afternoon and we should have a decent weekend at home for Labor Day.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all of you who lended your support via comments and Twitter! Know that if you ever need my support, all you have to do is ask :)

No it is NOT normal for it to do it. I hope this gets some attention and gets fixed. I am so sorry this happened to you sweetie. Thoughts and prayers your way.
I just received your email updates and saw that this happened to you! I am so, so sorry! I can only imagine how scared your children were and how horrifying all this was for you and your entire family! Can you get the fire department to write up something that proves the cause of the fire was indeed from the faulty installation of the dryer. I would think that having that type of report to wave in front of Sears would carry a lot of weight. I know how upset you are and the last thing you need right now is stress and this most certainly is stressful for you. Also, if you can't get anywhere with Sears or whomever you are attempting to help you out, you may want to seek some legal advice. Sometimes evening mentioning "lawyer" might make them realize how serious this is to you.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family that this gets resolved and more importantly that you can piece the part of your life back together that were damaged from this!
Keep your chins up! Things will get better! At least you are all safe!
Take care,
Joanna
How Scary! I would be calling the higher ups at Sears until you get someone to help you! If not, go to the papers!! This is crap!
SEARS definitely needs to step up to the plate and do something about this! NUTS!
That is nuts! I am so glad you are all safe but I'd definitely be talking to someone regarding the fact something they "repaired" obviously was not right!
I am so sorry to hear it. But it looks like you will have to take a legal action. "Big guys" will keep ignoring you till they will have to face the Court.
Oh dear. First of all, I am so so sorry you all had to go through this. Sounds to me like Sears not only has explaining to do but also a heck of a lot of compensation seems due.
I am just aghast that Sears would claim no responsibility when it's crystal clear that you contacted them not just once but twice! I would be livid.
Even though this is a horrible tragedy for you, you really have done us a service, letting us know what you've experienced. I know I'll pass on by Sears now. Funny thing is, we were saying last week that if we could depend on any repairmen/installation, it was from Sears. Eeeek.
I do so hope everyone is okay. A little prayer for you tonight:)
Omg, I would be flippin out! I hope everything turns out ok.
That's horrible! I am so sorry you had to go through this. Years ago on Christmas EVE my best friend's house caught fire and she barely got out with her 3 kids. They lost everything. Fires are scary.
I am appalled that Sears isn't stepping up on this. They bear a responsibility to you. You know that you had the repair man there and so that is proof that you were worried.
That alone should cause Sears some concern. I surely hope they come forward to help you. Any company with a reputation for honesty and responsibility should. Come on, Sears, do the right thing.
The first thing you need to do is get in touch with your insurance agent. If you don't know what sort of emergency coverage you have, s/he will. Hopefully it will take care of putting you up in a hotel until the house is livable. Let them fight with Sears - that's part of what you pay premiums for. Good luck!
OMG! Stay on them girl....that is definitely not normal and should have been taken care of at the first call. Have you checked on recalls or others with issues regarding that same model?
I'm hoping that by this point you've found somewhere to stay but if not you might check your local police department to see if they know of any local programs that might help you for a night or so.
Good luck!
I am glad that all of you are safe but sorry to hear about your fire. Even though your warranty is over there's has to be something the company can do. This could have been your whole house that could have been destroyed.
Good luck dealing with Sears. I've heard so many people complain about them and their service. It seems they contract out a lot of their work and then don't take responsibility. I don't ever buy anything from them for that reason. I find the privately owned appliance stores do a better job.
So sorry Clarissa!! Do you know if there was a problem w/ the dryer venting? My husband sells appliances and he said if there was a problem due to this, they are liable! I hope you get this all straightened out, and soon! My thoughts are with you.
I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. I wish I had words of advice, but all I have are words of sympathy. We have also had very bad luck with Sears (not to your extent, however, just did not have a working dryer for a month because every person they sent out had no clue what they were doing) and have come down to banning them from anywhere near our house. I have also heard from many others who have nothing but horrible experiences with Sears. I hope that you can get some rectification from them and wish you luck.
OMG!! That is crazy! I would be beyond pissed! Have you contacted Frigidaire?
Oh no! I'm so sorry, but I'm glad everyone is okay.
I can't believe they said it was normal. So scary that they'll just accept that it happens and not try to take any steps to fix their equipment!
Wow. I'm so glad that no one was injured, and that your entire house wasn't lost in the fire.
I think that Sears or Frigidaire should look into this and help you guys out. What if another appliance goes? They should definitely stand behind their name.
I hope all work out well for you guys!!
Hi sweetie, I sent this post over to someone I know at in Sears marketing. Hoping they can help you!
Take care!
Sheena
I know it sucks and I hope it all gets taken care of. Be thankful though that you are all ok!
OMG...that is awful! I'm soooo sorry!!! Poor baby!
You poor thing! Obviously they sent an incompetent tech out in the first place! I hope you get all this straightened out soon- I wish I lived closer so I could help you!

Sorry this happened. But shouldn't you call your insurance company first?
Oh my goodness, this is terrible! I am so sorry.. you must be feeling soo stressed out!!!
I can't say I am shocked about SEARS passing the buck.. seems like that's the way it is these days.. No Accountability!
It sounds like they are completely responsible and should make amends for you and your family!
Starting with a clean up crew, hotel, replacement of all your things, ect ect ect!!!
I hope you are able to get SEARS attention!!!
Thank God for the angels watching over you and your family! Stick to your guns and don't take that "out of warranty" crap!
Should I pack my kids and hubby and take them to NY to help you guys out. We can totally do that if you need us!
-Chelziee
Pathetic customer service! I am glad ya'll are ok! Go straight to the top...as high as you can go...with both companies! Write letters, emails, phone calls, etc! The sqeaky wheel gets the oil!!
Oh no hon!!! I'm so glad you're all fine...that's the most important thing. ((hugs)) I do however think it is complete bull shit that they are not going to do anything for you! You could sue them for damages and time off work since they never fixed it like they said they did! Guess I won't be buying a new one from them! Good luck!!! Keep us all posted! And let me know if there is anything I can do for ya!
This is terrible! Good thing you are all safe and only the laundry room is toast. (Silver lining?)
I hope Sears gets the message and is responsive because if the fire could have been prevented with proper repair, I would argue they are liable for the damages!
Wow, The accountablityt on Sears part just sucks! My husband and I have started buying everything at Lowe's for just that reason, they stand behind their appliances and theri mistakes.
Take care if yourself and that baby...that is top priority, and I hope you get this resolved soon.
*huge hugs* I'm so grateful you're alright!
Oh no! I am so sorry, that is horrible news.
I hope everything turns out alright for you! If they won't budge for you, maybe have a law office call on your behalf about the issue...that will definately light the "fire" under their tooshes :)
Sears better step up! This is just insane!
OMG! That's horrible. Thank God you are all Ok. It could have been so much worse!
I think Sears AND Frigidaire have some 'splainin to do, right quick.
HUGZ!
Wait 'til this one goes viral...
OMG that's scary. Sorry to hear that. Despite the mess and hassle of loosing all the stuff in the room it could have been a lot worse. Take lots of pictures. Hope you get this resolved soon.
I'm so glad that it was not worse!
You need to contact frigidare immediately and make a report- they need to know that their products are causing fires. I'm surprised at Sears lack of action. I guess I can cross them off my list for our new fridge
I'm glad you're all ok!
You can add my family to the "We won't buy appliances from Sears" list. This was before your post. I've never had good customer service there, and Lowe's always has a better deal.
I am so sorry to hear you are having to deal with this. We had a house fire two years ago that started in our attic just before bedtime. It left us displaced and living in a hotel for several weeks, but the hardest part was the emotional after math. I didn't even want to move back into the house because I was afraid it would happen again, only after we were in bed. I didn't sleep well for months @@! And that's not something you need when you're expecting. Your Insurance probably will take care of everything, including having a company come in and clean and repair, and your hotel bill and meals if you had to stay away at all. But ethically I think Sears owes you an apology at the very least. And if nothing else hopefully your contact with them will cause them to think, and investigate things more carefully in the future, so that no one else has to go through what you and your family are going through. Please keep us updated on what response you get from Sears, and on how you and the family are doing overall!
Sending thoughts and prayers your way!
Viki
I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, Clarissa! Warranty or not, they need to do something about this. Who knows, next time someone could lose their home or family.
Good luck sweetie, keep us updated. I'm hoping Sears and Frigidaire will step up and do the right thing.
Oh no, I'm just seeing this and I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope you can get things straight soon. I don't know if they have this in your area, but there is a company called Serv Pro that comes in and will clean up after a disaster like a fire. You might want to see if they have it in your area. They are supposed to be really good.
I am so glad you and your family are safe. I guess if you can find a bright side to this at least you were home and you weren't about to have the baby. Hopefully this will all work out soon. I know things like this are such a hassel. I will keep y'all in my prayers.
I am so sorry to hear that this happened! I really hope that Sears and/or Frigidaire will help you resolve this. I cannot believe how customer service seems so unresponsive to your situation, especially since they came out to "fix" the problem.
Wow! glad everyone is ok! We had something like this happen to us also. Fire dept, etc...not fun. Also I learned that the best dryer aka whirpool is not always the best investment. We bought the calypso washer/dryer combo. The washing machine broke after 2 years, so we went to lowes and bought a no name brand, 5 years and still going :)
